Speculative Automotive Experience
Autonomous vehicles teeter
on the edge of science fiction
and science fact. Algorithms can
replace drivers and help reclaim
lost time, but technology alone
cannot soothe the soul.
Based on L4,
DriveXP is a stepping stone
between the status quo
and the fully autonomous future.
A digital driver, trajectory control,
and recreated layout together
pave the way for a future of
productivity, entertainment, and
social engagement in the cabin.
How might we transform
stress and monotony
into valuable time of
productivity, entertainment,
and social engagement
inside the moving cabin?
learning from the drivers
Mental
Model Hurdle
Passengers trust humans
to make similar judgments
on the road. The lack of
understanding of technology
behind autonomous driving
leads to fear and distrust
in handing over driving
control to vehicle.
Fear, distrust, and confusion
outweigh convenience of driving features
more complex than cruise control.
Some of most joyful conversations happen
in the vehicle but the back row is neglected.
Current cabin space presents
no solutions to place or interact with
personal items and leads to frustration.
Infotainment systems provide
insufficient functionalities so users turn
to other devices for needs in digital life.
After rounds of ideation, the idea of an digital driver
bridging the passengers and autonomous systems,
along with a central hub for interaction and storage,
revolving seats for equitable cabin social engagement,
and touchscreen trajectory control leveraging
existing mental model stand out.
With equipments on hand,
we set up a testing environment
with a pepper's ghost digital driver
and tablets for trajectory drawing to
validate and refine the experience.
DIGITAL
DRIVER
The digital driver, responding to vehicle dynamics and
road condition like a human, bridges the gap between
passengers and autonomous systems. Light field holography
allows the character to respond in real-time in 3D while
customization options bring users closer to the cabin.
Coaxial
Layout
With digital driver freeing passengers up, conversation can finally
happen face-to-face in the cabin.Water fall dashboard, swivel seats,
and central hub supports various activities: hop on a video call,
watch a movie, or play board games. Wherever the user is in the cabin,
there is always a digital driver in sight providing driving related information.
Trajectory
Control
Vehicle control must evolve alongside the emergence of digital driver.
A touchscreen-based system, while providing versatility for various digital NDRAs,
allow users to plan their routes on the finger tips. The system promotes a smooth
transition into an autonomous future through the spirit of NUI: leveraging previous
knowledge and existing mental model for a shallower learning curve and familiarity.
