Description

A lamp recreating the nostalgic curve of a childhood swing.

Context

Winner of GT’s Make 10 Innovation Award.

How can novel technology speak to nostalgia? In Arch, a flexible LED filament (nOOds) dances through an acrylic parabola, recreating your favorite childhood swing. The bent sheet aluminum base, the heat-formed acrylic frame, and the minimized circuitry gather and bring a democratic sensual experience.

The Arch lamp lit in a dark room: a glowing parabolic arc of LED filament over a brushed metal base, with a small pendant hanging at the center
Close-up of the lit acrylic arch, its engraved grid pattern catching the warm light. A small engraved diamond pendant hangs on a cord at the center, its face reading Arch #01/10, Jo Yan, 2023, Installation, Mixed Media, above a hand signature.

The Arch lamp unlit against a black background: a clear acrylic parabola engraved with a fine grid, an orange LED filament threaded through it, and a small engraved diamond pendant hanging from the apex on the orange cord. It stands on a bent, brushed aluminum base with a scalloped front edge and a knurled control knob.
